Speaking Singpho: Why Preserving Our Language Is an Act of Resistance

By SYO Cultural Wing · 21 Mar 2026

The Singpho language belongs to the Tibeto-Burman family, closely related to Jingpo spoken in Myanmar's Kachin State.

Language is the container of knowledge — botanical names for forest plants, the names of river spirits and hill deities, the songs sung at birth and at death. When a language dies, these knowledge systems die with it.

SYO runs Singpho language classes for youth in Bordumsa and Namsai, and is lobbying for inclusion of Singpho in the school curriculum of Arunachal Pradesh and Assam.
